Moving House Checklist

Moving can be daunting so the following tips will help you to eliminate some of the stress and help move day run as smoothly as possible.

Get several removals quotes

It is always a good idea to get several removal quotes well in advance, this will usually mean an estimator coming to site to complete a quick site survey to enable them to provide you with a fixed price quotation. Always ensure there are no hidden extra costs. Let the estimator know if there are any access worries at your new property such as restricted road widths or lots of flights of stairs.

Book your removals date

When you have chosen your removal company give them a call to discuss dates and see if they are able to hold a day for you, we generally do this a lot for clients and normally Solicitors and Estate Agents are great at working towards the dates provided.

Get some removals boxes

Ask your removal company for boxes well in advance to enable you to start packing. We provide boxes free of charge for our clients on our reuse, recycle, return policy, whereby we lend our clients boxes on the proviso that when you have settled into your new home and unpacked you call us so that we can collect and use for future clients. This approach has worked very well over the years and means our clients do not have the added expense of purchasing boxes, and it is our little way of helping the environment.

Organise your packing

When packing make sure you write on the box what is in it and where it is going, we advise that you write on the tape on the top of the box (this enables us to reuse the box). This will enable your removal team on the day to know exactly where the items are going without the need to keep asking you, this will also help the removal team work quickly and efficiently.

Tell utilities companies you are moving

Remember to advise your utility companies of your move and on the move day itself take readings from your meters, electricity, gas and water. We would also advise that you take a photograph of the meters with the reading so that you have photographic proof.

Keep a box of essentials to hand

Pack an overnight box so that when you get to your new house you have the essentials at hand without having to unpack copious amounts of boxes to find what you are looking for, phone chargers, a fresh change of clothes, toiletries, anything that you think you might need, and of course the kettle, mugs and tea bags/coffee.

Tell businesses you are moving

Remember to advise all of your contacts about your change of address, all utilities, DVLA, Insurance companies, phone companies, banks, building societies. It is also a good idea to contact the Post Office and get a mail redirection in place so that this commences from your move date.

Keep your removals company in the loop

Keep your removal company up to speed with your sales/rental progression. If your date changes let them know as soon as you can and hopefully most companies will be able to accommodate date changes.
